1. Burbio’s Signals Tracker analyzes millions of pages of district school board discussions and delivers clients highly specific insights on district intent. As AI adoptions accelerate across K-12, this week we take a look at how districts describe AI pilot programs. We examined hundreds of district discussions over the last six weeks and identified four frameworks that emerged:
- Utilizing Phased and Targeted Rollouts to Manage Risk
- Indianapolis Public Schools, IN, deploys AI pilots on a rolling basis. A recent trial involved 200 staff using AI to analyze large data sets, support school improvement planning, streamline complex tasks such as scheduling, and identify community resources for families.
- Rush-Henrietta Central School District, NY launched pilot programs exclusively with administrators and a select group of teachers to test the capabilities of AI tools before expanding access.
- Using Pilots to Inform Policy and Governance
- North Shore SD 112, IL used an AI pilot program to gather empirical data on student outcomes and staff readiness, which directly informed their new comprehensive AI Board Policy.
- Onteora Central School District, NY is collaborating with a regional BOCES on a pilot program establishing policies for the safe and effective use of AI.
- Evaluating EdTech Platforms Through Time-Bound Contracts
- New Haven School District, CT has purchase orders for pilot programs with two vendors from February to June 2026 to assess the platforms.
- Ithaca City School District, NY initiated a "no cost pilot" with an AI tool, allowing the board to evaluate the program before requesting potential costs for its continuation.
- Gathering Stakeholder Feedback and Monitoring Quality
- Last month Oyster River Coop School District, NH, conducted an AI-focused Teacher Workshop day featuring both student and teacher speakers involved in their AI pilot running since last Fall.
- In Fairfax County Public Schools, VA, an active pilot of an AI tutoring service across 18 schools involves continuous discussions about data privacy, teacher productivity, and addressing equity gaps.

3. This time of year districts present budgets for 2026-27, often in the form of school board meeting presentations or preliminary "budget books." Districts highlight areas of investment that present opportunities for suppliers. Below are a handful of priorities from the districts highlighted:
Wicomico County Public Schools, MD, outlines the following:
