This week the percentage of students attending virtual only schools dropped for the first time since early November.

[Burbio School Opening Tracker- Map](https://t.sidekickopen87.com/s3t/c/5/f18dQhb0S7kF8cN1-lW4Z38YH2zGCwVN8Jbw_8QsRtKMp0zlYQBvXjW16gGyW4Fjgc_101?te=W3R5hFj4cm2zwW3F4F623CgqX4W3T1FDf43T4P7W3F7y_53ZrXwFW3K77jP3NBbrsw3z8nfr48Y2&si=8000000005008834&pi=3680e091-749e-4ed4-b455-247f5e88f237)

% US K-12 students attending "virtual-only" schools =** 49.6% (from 55% last week)**
% US K-12 students attending "traditional" In-person/every day" schools = 32.4%
% US K-12 students attending "hybrid" schools = 17.8%

*The above percentages are set to Sunday, January 17th. Our data is presented as "students attending schools that offer this learning plan" - most districts also offer virtual even when providing in-person. For above, 49.6% of US K-12 students are currently attending schools that offer virtual-only plans, 32.4% offering traditional, etc.*

1) During the Fall the number of US K-12 students attending virtual only schools started at a high of [62% at Labor Day](https://t.sidekickopen87.com/s3t/c/5/f18dQhb0S7kF8cN1-lW4Z38YH2zGCwVN8Jbw_8QsRtKMp0zlYQBvXjW16gGyW4Fjgc_101?te=W3R5hFj4cm2zwW4mKLS-45TR-yW3BKSWw3_rjd5W3ZVbTB3K96BVW41NQbB41YyJdW4hF6G549M9mhW3vhslz3K0X8nW3zdYpC1NrZ1RW3vlMLN3vgB-fW1Sp27c3CbGSNW3vkY7g43V14cW4cQjfT3K78h1W3vkZDL49RLJ-W3N-03X3R3bRnW3vmb4P4fPdv0W3-1x9K3R0KkkW3M0gW-1LCtTVW3K22HL1V2r3pw1X0yq09CW2&si=8000000005008834&pi=3680e091-749e-4ed4-b455-247f5e88f237), falling gradually to a low of [around 37% by early November ](https://t.sidekickopen87.com/s3t/c/5/f18dQhb0S7kF8cN1-lW4Z38YH2zGCwVN8Jbw_8QsRtKMp0zlYQBvXjW16gGyW4Fjgc_101?te=W3R5hFj4cm2zwW3T1k3k1Jx5_0W3C9qYl3Fbt5SW4cHc2L43SH72W49HR8w3K8JY_W45M-pK3JF4WBW4k9hPf1S1nmq1V3&si=8000000005008834&pi=3680e091-749e-4ed4-b455-247f5e88f237). Rising Covid rates and precautionary holiday related breaks concentrated in the Midwest and Northeast took that number back up to [55% as of last week.](https://t.sidekickopen87.com/s3t/c/5/f18dQhb0S7kF8cN1-lW4Z38YH2zGCwVN8Jbw_8QsRtKMp0zlYQBvXjW16gGyW4Fjgc_101?te=W3R5hFj4cm2zwW3T1k3k1Jx5_0W3C9qYl3Fbt5SW4cHc2L43SH72W49HR8w3K8JY_W45M-pK3JF4ymf41nX2XV3&si=8000000005008834&pi=3680e091-749e-4ed4-b455-247f5e88f237) In the past week the "virtual" number fell to 49.6%, its first drop since before Thanksgiving.

2) We counted schools in 26 states returning from virtual-only to in-person options, generally in small to mid-size districts concentrated in the Midwest and Northeast. 3) We did see some in-person reversals and delays. [Topeka, KS](https://t.sidekickopen87.com/s3t/c/5/f18dQhb0S7kF8cN1-lW4Z38YH2zGCwVN8Jbw_8QsRtKMp0zlYQBvXjW16gGyW4Fjgc_101?te=W3R5hFj4cm2zwW4mKLS-4fLMZcW3XV0P13CbGSNW4cHc2L43SPfCf41RkwN04&si=8000000005008834&pi=3680e091-749e-4ed4-b455-247f5e88f237) schools are going virtual for two weeks starting this week. [Gwinnett County, GA](https://t.sidekickopen87.com/s3t/c/5/f18dQhb0S7kF8cN1-lW4Z38YH2zGCwVN8Jbw_8QsRtKMp0zlYQBvXjW16gGyW4Fjgc_101?te=W3R5hFj4cm2zwW4mKLS-3N_GKwW3XvYxz43Wg2wW4cKKZc1Lwt1nW3zhTVP1JwJkTW4pfXmZ3P0sc7W45NkJt1pwfb5W3zbVlX2vFDwdW1N7bYv2RPrgpW3ZV8MK4cQgwdW3F6fcg2dNW5hW1V2R7R3SZCgyW2vFDY-1X0_W1W22X-Md1T_Zm7W1X2d4y1GdpbXW1-Wk2q22X_DlW2qDpwm1N7C5RW3K76TX49x5f1W2dLmS-3ZVdTMW3zhrrc2vFDwhW1V2rkJ1pCcG9W3JSHv91S32fY2133&si=8000000005008834&pi=3680e091-749e-4ed4-b455-247f5e88f237) will be going virtual next week. [Evanston, IL](https://t.sidekickopen87.com/s3t/c/5/f18dQhb0S7kF8cN1-lW4Z38YH2zGCwVN8Jbw_8QsRtKMp0zlYQBvXjW16gGyW4Fjgc_101?te=W3R5hFj4cm2zwW4mKLS-3H6xj-W49M7ZK1-ZFqvW3K9y3J3T3QQ9W3H4Sgt4hJ3msW3zh2hz2jXVdQW3JYlnj3JMGhCW2w1xx13T1gw2W2dN1MD43PsGbW3JSMbh4fDY6VW3JSHv91Q2S6tW1pFLbS4mmwywW1-Zdsg2xHwqMW1Gj-qR2syqHkW212Sq11V0lJ7W1V94S220XQ9NW2xx9dd1pD2ZxW3H4Tj-43NZd-W1px3T_4pj1f2W3yZvtr1Q2ShYW1N09fV3P0rd034kr2&si=8000000005008834&pi=3680e091-749e-4ed4-b455-247f5e88f237) delayed their (first time) return past January 19th. [Alamance County, NC](https://t.sidekickopen87.com/s3t/c/5/f18dQhb0S7kF8cN1-lW4Z38YH2zGCwVN8Jbw_8QsRtKMp0zlYQBvXjW16gGyW4Fjgc_101?te=W3R5hFj4cm2zwW4fQ47l4fGCmnW3Fbt5S2nN6mDW2YMzs43SYG0LW4fDYGG4cgtx7W1X2cyM1V19hFW1-_jX61V20dTw1X4RbD4dv2&si=8000000005008834&pi=3680e091-749e-4ed4-b455-247f5e88f237) pushed their planned (first time) in-person return from February 1st to at least March 1st and [Cumberland County, NC](https://t.sidekickopen87.com/s3t/c/5/f18dQhb0S7kF8cN1-lW4Z38YH2zGCwVN8Jbw_8QsRtKMp0zlYQBvXjW16gGyW4Fjgc_101?te=W3R5hFj4cm2zwW4mKLS-3F5tYKW3XvYxz41QnrZW4cgBl14fGvvMW3K3PQZ3Z_mvXW4cNFCV2YCfp3W34HrBB2dMDgRW43T98_41CC0SW1WWm0G3Hcwp3W2HVT563zdYNrW2Hzhpr1N82dKW38vT232HzhpxW1X07DG2xB5fmW2vzsHw1GbkmkW2xvx6h1Q5kgmW2zyFML1X5-0fW1Q2Snv30B0X6W3K8MGS3DQz10W2zZmq02vXKvpW2Hzhpr1S3VRwW1pCcG93JSHv91X3&si=8000000005008834&pi=3680e091-749e-4ed4-b455-247f5e88f237), which has also never been in-person, pushed their start date back to at least 3/15. [The Austin, TX school district](https://t.sidekickopen87.com/s3t/c/5/f18dQhb0S7kF8cN1-lW4Z38YH2zGCwVN8Jbw_8QsRtKMp0zlYQBvXjW16gGyW4Fjgc_101?te=W3R5hFj4cm2zwW4mKLS-3Y2zngW1JxwY51LBDN_W4cgz5z4hDhs0W3T1McJ3zhVv-W3T1d2_4cHxlNW49Lk9X1GGmmRW3K78h11GHFsSW3H4S-M4cfMtDW1Gy-qY4fJfYfW3JF5Cp49RMMDW3ZrXfc3zgDF9W41S2fC3Kck01f4mBcMrV3&si=8000000005008834&pi=3680e091-749e-4ed4-b455-247f5e88f237) is "asking" parents to keep their students home to learn virtually while keeping schools open for special situations amid [Covid-19 rates among school-age children](https://t.sidekickopen87.com/s3t/c/5/f18dQhb0S7kF8cN1-lW4Z38YH2zGCwVN8Jbw_8QsRtKMp0zlYQBvXjW16gGyW4Fjgc_101?te=W3R5hFj4cm2zwW4mKLS-3Y2zngW1JxwY51LBDN_W4cgz5z4hDhs0W3T1McJ3FbtXBW3GGs1c1GGnCcW3T3R9s3T3SyZW49HSF_1Gy7jcW41S2fJ3F7y_5W3ZrWsC3T0tYFW3K722m4hMnRtW3F7-mS1GJ1VhW1GHbH34fdhxYW1GJ1Vh1Gy80cW4fJfWX3Fbt6_W4hJVmT4r5NPDW45Q31349KvSwW4fGB6_49Kv2_W49JyMN4fKWwkW3zdyrm3S-qqXW3Fd-wl43T3VxW1Nz8Yb3S-pjjW3T1Mcx4hMnzcW4cNcV-3F6d9bW49PGHQ1mp5CWW3T1ktH4hMnzcW3_SMDQ4hJp1lw3K9cTx9V12&si=8000000005008834&pi=3680e091-749e-4ed4-b455-247f5e88f237) that are above the rest of the community.

4) This coming week another batch of school districts, some of which are larger, plan to return from slightly longer post-Holiday precautionary breaks and the virtual-only figure should drop further. In two examples, [Indianapolis, IN](https://t.sidekickopen87.com/s3t/c/5/f18dQhb0S7kF8cN1-lW4Z38YH2zGCwVN8Jbw_8QsRtKMp0zlYQBvXjW16gGyW4Fjgc_101?te=W3R5hFj4cm2zwW4004zd4cg8wCW3NB_Qg43QBY4W3T3qGW3SYN2BW3T296_49KwyQW49PfKp4fLG3GW41p0Cy49RkMPW1GDJQZ49PdTbW3NB9_H1GCTw-f1G93Yh04&si=8000000005008834&pi=3680e091-749e-4ed4-b455-247f5e88f237) plans to return K-3 students this week and grades 4-12 the week after while [Colorado Springs, CO](https://t.sidekickopen87.com/s3t/c/5/f18dQhb0S7kF8cN1-lW4Z38YH2zGCwVN8Jbw_8QsRtKMp0zlYQBvXjW16gGyW4Fjgc_101?te=W3R5hFj4cm2zwW4mKLS-3GJ5XxF43Wg2wBNtC1&si=8000000005008834&pi=3680e091-749e-4ed4-b455-247f5e88f237) will return elementary (traditional) and grades 6-12 (hybrid) this week.

6) We noted last week the trend of smaller cities struggling to get students in the classroom, many of which have target dates far beyond large cities. [Pawtucket, RI schools](https://www.wpri.com/health/coronavirus/school-updates/pawtucket-students-to-learn-remotely-for-remainder-of-the-year-district-decides/) will remain virtual for the balance of the year despite pressure from the state to return. "They are the only district in the state that has not come back, so there is really no other reason than they are making that decision," said the State Superintendent in this [local news report.](https://www.wpri.com/health/coronavirus/school-updates/pawtucket-students-to-learn-remotely-for-remainder-of-the-year-district-decides/) In [Allentown, PA](https://t.sidekickopen87.com/s3t/c/5/f18dQhb0S7kF8cN1-lW4Z38YH2zGCwVN8Jbw_8QsRtKMp0zlYQBvXjW16gGyW4Fjgc_101?te=W3R5hFj4cm2zwW4mKLS-3zd6CSW41YzcS41Y6MKW43Wg2w4mCsRxW3vkXPq3KbPtZW1V8N_Y3K78b5W43TxGn3C6XSrW3GP7Mc2nVL8qW4hbQWm4mDHLVW2qQprS3JZyT9W1_5dk941t8sBW49sKxy3W1wRKW2HJs6w4cxG9lW1Zrg582zz62rF49V9hMW2rR1&si=8000000005008834&pi=3680e091-749e-4ed4-b455-247f5e88f237) schools will remain virtual through at least April 14th. Given the additional Federal funding initiatives underway, it would seem that this coming summer could be a practical time to begin addressing this issue.
