Individual holidays can vary nationally, often resulting in three-day weekends that impact travel and shopping patterns. For example, October 12, 2026, referred to by districts as either Columbus Day or Indigenous Peoples’ Day, is a school holiday for just over half of K–12 students nationwide. 3. Burbio’s K-12 Construction Tracker follows school construction projects from early discussion through completion and categorizes each project by type and stage. One category, "facility refreshes", captures upgrades and replacements at existing schools rather than the construction of new campuses. Here are six examples discussed since June:
- Cheshire School District (CT) is advancing roof replacements at multiple schools along with HVAC and window upgrades through an energy-performance contract. The district has approved educational specifications needed to seek state construction grants.
- Buckeye Local Schools (OH) is moving forward with several existing-facility projects, including elementary and high school roof replacements, a bus-garage masonry seal, and emergency auditorium improvements. The district has also selected firms to provide design and construction-management services.
- New Trier Township HSD 203 (IL) is carrying out a two-year, $15 million Health Life Safety program addressing aging electrical and HVAC systems, door-locking hardware, and clock, bell, and public-address systems at its two campuses.
- Sycamore CUSD 427 (IL) is developing a five-year plan to address approximately $73 million in identified facility needs. Priorities include HVAC and mechanical equipment, roofs, doors, windows, masonry, plumbing, accessibility, fire-safety systems, and interior finishes.
- Waterford Union High School District (WI) is nearing completion of a major renovation involving asbestos abatement, boiler and HVAC work, updated art and engineering classrooms, kitchen improvements, and accessibility upgrades.
- Greeneview Local Schools (OH) selected an architect to evaluate recurring roof problems at its elementary and middle schools. The firm will determine whether the roofs should be patched, restored, or replaced, with construction targeted for summer 2027.
