1. Burbio’s Signals Tracker analyzes millions of pages of school district board documents nationwide. As districts enter the 2026–27 school year, this week we look at trends in addressing chronic absenteeism. The trends below are taken from just under 1,000 district discussions nationwide for meetings held since early August:

  • Catching attendance problems early: Districts use regular attendance reviews and early-warning systems to identify students who need help and trigger follow-up before absences accumulate.
  • Matching support to the student: Schoolwide attendance efforts are combined with individualized plans, counseling, and more intensive support for students who continue missing school.
  • Working directly with families: Personal calls, family meetings, and home visits help schools understand why students are absent and connect them with transportation, counseling, or other assistance.
  • Building stronger connections to school: Mentoring, peer relationships, attendance incentives, and engaging activities aim to give students stronger reasons to attend.
  • Targeting groups with higher absence rates: Districts tailor support for students with disabilities, English learners, economically disadvantaged students, and students experiencing homelessness.
  • Assigning responsibility and tracking progress: Attendance teams and designated staff coordinate interventions, set measurable goals, and review whether their efforts are improving attendance.

2. Burbio’s State Grant Tracker tracks funding opportunities for PreK–12 schools across state agencies and alerts clients as new grants are announced, supporting early outreach to eligible districts. Below are five open grants across five states supporting CTE and career readiness, from equipment and curriculum to employer partnerships and college coursework:

  • In Massachusetts, the CTE Frameworks and Competency-Based Implementation Grant supports staff training and curriculum updates to align career and technical education programs with state standards.
  • In Idaho, the Career Ready Students Micro-Grant provides up to $20,000 to expand middle- and high-school CTE programs, emphasizing equipment and workforce needs.
  • In Iowa, the STEM BEST Grant provides up to $50,000 for school-business partnerships that connect classroom learning with hands-on projects and career experiences.
  • In California, the College and Career Access Pathways Grant provides $100,000 per participating high school to establish or expand community college partnerships that allow students to earn college credit while in high school.
  • In Arkansas, the CTE State Start-Up Grant covers up to 85% of eligible equipment costs to launch career pathways in high-wage, high-demand fields.

3. Burbio’s K-12 Construction Tracker monitors activity from early stages of planning through design, procurement, and construction. By tracking school board meetings, capital plans, bond discussions, facility studies, and other activity, Burbio identifies projects as they develop, including highly specific projects. Below are examples of recent activity for lighting for arts activities:

  • Hutchinson Public Schools, KS: The district is seeking Board approval to apply for an Educational Theatre Association grant to upgrade stage cyclorama lighting to LED at Hutchinson High School.
  • Fluvanna County Public Schools, VA: The district has identified lighting and audiovisual upgrades for the high school auditorium, citing aging equipment, safety, and modernization needs. The project includes funding to replacement equipment.
  • Craven County Schools, NC: The district is exploring a 1,000-seat performing arts center at New Bern High School, with theater, stage, backstage, and lighting infrastructure. Construction could begin in summer 2027.
  • Harleton ISD, TX: The Board approved installation of a new lighting system in the high school auditorium, with funding from the district's 2026-27 budget.
  • Maplewood-Richmond Heights School District, MO: The Board approved a theater renovation proposal that includes a lighting package, added through an amendment before final approval.

4. Burbio's Calendar Intelligence dataset links school calendars to local ZIP codes, helping organizations anticipate shifts in demand, staffing, travel, and childcare. The last day of school marks a shift in consumer behavior for families, and timing can vary sharply within a state. In California, students finish across an 18-day window, from May 25 through June 11, with June 4 the most common date at 27% of enrollment.

Texas follows a more concentrated pattern. More than three-quarters of students finish school on May 26, May 27, or May 28, including 39% on May 27 alone:
